- Alvaro Morata still has the chance to go to the World Cup despite patchy form
- Chelsea striker has struggled this year but scored against Leicester in FA Cup
- Spain boss Julen Lopetegui says door is still open for Morata to prove himself
The Chelsea forward has been omitted from the international set-up for friendlies against Germany on Friday and Argentina next Tuesday.
His form for the Blues has been underwhelming although the striker netted against Leicester in his side’s victory in the FA Cup.
Alvaro Morata scored against Leicester and is looking to find his best form again
Julen Lopetegui said the door is still open for the Chelsea striker to go to the World Cup
And Lopetegui’s encouragement of Morata also came laced with a warning that the former Real Madrid man needs to show his true colours in the next couple of months or risk being left at home for the World Cup.
‘Of course Morata has a lot of possibilities to go to the World Cup and he knows it,’ he told El Partidazo de COPE on Monday.
‘He has to show these months the player he is inside.’
Morata’s form has been patchy since the turn of the year but he has time to prove himself
With 13 goals in 39 games for Chelsea this season, the 25-year-old is yet to hit the heights he managed at Juventus and Real Madrid.
But Morata will be hoping his goal against the Foxes signals a timely return to form.
Chelsea are fighting for a top four finish and if Morata fires them to Champions League qualification then Lopetegui is likely to come calling.
