Manchester United duo Marcus Rashford and Ashley Young take to Twitter to celebrate World Cup place

On the day Marcus Rashford’s dreams of going to the World Cup were realised, he took to Twitter to pay tribute to his mum.

Gareth Southgate announced his official World Cup squad on Wednesday afternoon where Manchester United team-mates Rashford and Ashley Young were among those handed a seat on the plane to Russia.

United striker Rashford, among a host of other World Cup hopefuls, sat anxiously as he awaited the call that would tell him whether to pack his bags for Russia or for a summer holiday.

Fortunately for him, good news awaited and he was named in Southgate’s 23-man squad.

As he celebrated a well-earned call-up after playing a significant role in guiding Jose Mourinho’s side to a second-place finish in the Premier League, he took to Twitter to celebrate his achievement.

Rashford, who will get his first taste of a World Cup this summer, extended his gratitude to his mum after her years of watching on from the sidelines as her son pursued his dream. A dream that on Wednesday came true.

Along with images of himself in a recent appearance for the Three Lions, he wrote: ‘After years of you standing on the touch line in the cold and rain, Mum we’re off to the World Cup!’

Young, meanwhile, who will also be traveling to his first World Cup, displayed an image of his childhood self, dressed in an England kit, sharing the desires of so many budding young footballers.

‘Maybe this picture said I was gonna live my dream and go to a World Cup… dreams do come true,’ he wrote on Twitter.

The United duo of Young and Rashford have been extremely influential for the Old Trafford outfit this season, having a hand in 19 Premier League goals between them, and can feel deserving of a place among Southgate’s merry men.

Many of the England stars came forward to thank Southgate for the opportunity, or to show their pride in being selected. However, Kyle Walker was apparently none the wiser, as he posted a print screen showing a missed call from his national team coach.

He wrote: ‘The one call you don’t want to miss!! #WC2018’.

Probably not getting off to the best start, but he is on the plane nonetheless.

Walker’s Premier League winning campaign with Manchester City sees him a firm favourite to be a regular starter for Southgate in Russia.
