The Englishman feared the worst on Tuesday night when he was taken off on a stretcher during the first half of his side’s 5-2 win over Roma in the Champions League semi-final but had to wait until Wednesday to undergo a scan.
And Mendy, whose own season has been derailed by injury, has told Oxlade-Chamberlain to stay strong after it was confirmed that he had suffered significant damage to his knee ligaments and is looking at a rehabilitation period of months rather than weeks.

Benjamin Mendy has taken to Twitter to show his support for the Liverpool midfielder
‘Bro sorry to hear that.. wishing you a good recovery, come back stronger,’ the Frenchman wrote in response to a Tweet from Liverpool’s official account confirming the news.
Oxlade-Chamberlain later posted his own statement, saying he was ‘absolutely devastated to have picked up this injury at such a crucial time of the season.’
And Mendy was quick to respond once more, replying: ‘stay strong and positive bro, I know what it is. Best of luck with the recovery.’
Mendy has missed almost the entire season after suffering a cruciate knee ligament injury against Crystal Palace in September.
The 23-year-old, who joined City for £52m in the summer, made his long-awaited return on Sunday, coming on as a substitute in the 5-0 victory over Swansea at the Etihad.
