The 2026 World Cup will be hosted by Canada, Mexico and United States – known collectively as the United Bid – after they pipped Morocco in a vote held by the FIFA Congress on Wednesday.

The United bid won 134 (67 per cent) of the votes in Moscow, with Morocco picking up 65 votes (33 per cent). One vote went to neither of the bids.

In what represents a historic moment for soccer in North America, the USA will host 60 of the 80 games in 2026, including every game from the quarter-finals onward.

The latest edition of football’s flagship tournament begins in Russia on Thursday, with the host nation’s clash with Saudi Arabia kicking off a month of tournament action. In four years time, the World Cup will head to Qatar
